The first step in this puzzle is solving the crossword.  The crossword 
mechanics are a bit unusual.  Each entry in the crossword corresponds to 
two clues below; if you add the number from column A and column B you 
will know where to put the answer in the crossword.

The crossword clues are meant to be fairly easy, and in any case you can 
usually get yourself unstuck by figuring out which word in the other 
column hasn't matched up yet.

The solved crossword looks like this:

Once you have a list of words, it's tricky to know what to do with them.  
Hopefully you will notice that the words seem to form natural pairs:
